Since the PlayStation 5 launched, one of the most common questions from PSVR owners has been simple: can you keep using your PSVR headset on PS5?
The answer is yes, but PSVR (the original PSVR headset built for PS4) does not connect to PS5 in the same way it connects to PS4. The main reason is tracking. PSVR relies on the PlayStation Camera for PS4, and the PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PSVR. To use PSVR on PS5, you typically need a PlayStation Camera adaptor so the PS4 camera can connect to the PS5.
This guide breaks down exactly what you need, what works, and what to watch out for before you start.
Does PSVR work on PS5?
Yes. The original PSVR headset (PSVR1) works on PS5 for PSVR (PS4) games through backward compatibility, as long as you have the correct camera setup.
A quick clarification: PSVR1 and PSVR2 are different headsets with different libraries. This article is specifically about PSVR (PSVR1).
What you need to use PSVR on PS5 (quick checklist)

To use PSVR on PS5, you will generally need:
PSVR headset (PSVR1)
PSVR Processor Unit (the “box” that comes with the headset)
PlayStation Camera for PS4
PlayStation Camera adaptor for PS5 (connects the PS4 camera to the PS5)
The original PSVR cables from your kit (HDMI, USB, power)
The right controllers for your games:
Many PSVR games were designed around DualShock 4 tracking
Some games require PlayStation Move controllers
A smaller number support the Aim Controller
If you are buying PSVR second-hand, make sure the headset comes with the Processor Unit and the full cable set, because missing pieces make setup difficult.

PS5 HD Camera vs PS4 PlayStation Camera (important)
This is the most common point of confusion:
The PS5 HD Camera does not work with PSVR1.
PSVR1 requires the PlayStation Camera for PS4, connected to PS5 using the Camera adaptor.
So if you only own the PS5 HD Camera, it will not help you use PSVR1.
About the PlayStation Camera adaptor (this changed)
For a long time, Sony offered the PlayStation Camera adaptor through an official request process for PSVR owners.
However, Sony has stated that as of November 26, 2024 (or until supplies last), the PlayStation Camera adaptor is no longer available through that program. This means:
If you already have the adaptor, you are set.
If you do not have it, you may need to find one through third-party or resale markets, and availability will vary depending on your country.
If you are planning to use PSVR mainly on PS5, it is smart to confirm you can get the adaptor before buying a headset.
Are PSVR (PS4) games compatible with PS5?
In general, most PSVR games released for PS4 can be played on PS5 through backward compatibility, as long as your PSVR1 setup is working correctly.
Keep in mind that controllers still matter. If a VR game requires DualShock 4 or PS Move controllers on PS4, it will still require them on PS5.
Final tip: start with the right games
Once your setup is working, PSVR still has an excellent library and it is absolutely worth revisiting in 2026. If you want the strongest recommendations, I put together a ranked list of the best PSVR games, including comfort notes and the top picks to buy first.
